- To Anyone Interested:
-
- Here are my experiences of one day's worth of two new on-line services:
- First there was America OnLine, the new service by Quantum that is the
- resurrection of AppleLink Personal Edition. It installs easily. It has
- lots of access numbers that are shown to you automatically. It runs
- the first time. It has color and sound. It is fast. It has lots of
- different services available, with lots of Mac focus. It has windows
- and menus that act like a real Mac program. It has travel and stock
- gateways, among other special services. It has news items, and numerous
- conference rooms for chatting. It has lots of help available. It has Mac
- software to download. It came with very little documentation; but then,
- you don't NEED any. In short it is FUN! I intend to join up as a
- charter member now!
-
- Then there was Prodigy - that refugee from the PC world. I load it onto
- my IIcx. I start it up, and configure it with all ONE of the local
- phone numbers in the Denver area. I say "Launch," the windows vanish
- and...my machine bombs! Three times it bombs. There are no more controls
- to adjust, so I call the 800 number. I get an electronic voice telling me
- how to copy the folders onto my hard disk. I could read that in the
- manual, for crying out loud. Then I get a human voice. I tell him my
- problem, and he asks "Are you running under Multifinder?" Yes. "Well,
- that's your problem." Prodigy does not run under MultiFinder. What are
- they going to do with System 7.0 when the Mac is ALWAYS under MultiFinder.
-
- The next question: "What INIT's do you have?" (The ultimate question!)
- "Prodigy does not work with Pyro or ATM." The first HAS to be one of the
- most common INIT's in the Mac market. I list the rest of my INIT's (that
- takes a couple of minutes). Wait, you are using a NetModem? Well, that's
- a problem - Prodigy uses the same interrupts as Shiva, so you can't do
- that. Guess what, I don't use this product from my office....sigh...
-
- Were it not for the demo I saw at Software Etc, I would not know what the
- interface looks like. It's probably just as well that it bombed, since it
- looks like an clumsy, ugly interface (double click on buttons, no menu
- bar, white lettering on a grey background that is hard to read).
-
- That's my tale of a Saturday spent learning how to (and how NOT to design
- an on-line service). Anyone else with similar experiences?
